20130901-170417.jpg Goodnight Seamus Heaney I was born in your words Like a warm voiced uncle Sitting at a flickering fire Amongst the smell of peat and tea By your glimmering light I saw the childhood of my father In the black butter land Of Irish rural life warm and raw Hot milk and steaming spuds In the broad shouldered past Of horse and plough digging Planting pebbles smoothed And many hands laid to rest Wakes and whiskey prayers You made me long for home A voice as soft as Irish rain As black as the turf with roots Mellowed over years buried Burnished with your clever mind
